Interview with Recording Artist "Z"
Zusette Isabel DeLeon, better known by her stage name “Z”, is an American independent and multi-talented recording artist who, as a gifted musician, singer and songwriter, specializes in the Pop, R&B, and Hip Hop genres. For her debut single in 2015, Z collaborated with renowned New Jersey rapper Fetty Wap. The single, “Nobody’s Better,” garnered over 60 million plays on Spotify and birthed a fervent following of fans eager for her next release.
Z was born and currently resides in New Jersey. Her background is one that is quintessentially American with her maternal grandmother having made her way to the USA from the Dominican Republic in 1968 to
pursue a better life for her seven children. A hard-working woman, she scrimped and saved to ensure her six girls and one boy could fully take part in all that America had to offer. All became citizens, attended public schools in New York and joined the workforce, soon raising their own families.
Z is absolutely in love with everything music, (“some of my best friends are my playlists”), and how a song has the ability to make her feel in a myriad of profoundly moving ways. This is precisely why she turned her passion into a budding professional career so as to affect this experience upon those who so passionately follow her on this extraordinary musical journey.
Daily News: What does a typical day look like for you?
Z: I usually spend most of my day in the studio making music or at dance rehearsals. In my free time I love watching Netflix, hanging out with my friends and going to the mall.
Daily News: What projects have you recently been working on?
Z: At the moment my most important project is the creation of my music video for my latest single “Special 4 U” featuring Tory Lanez! That has been a really fun process. I’m really involved with the creative aspects in whatever music I put out. Check out my new single here!
Daily News: What was the inspiration for your career route?
Z: I have always been inspired by music itself. Music is a universal language, not only by speech but also through how it can make you feel and that’s what I’ve always adored about it. You can allow yourself to experience all kinds of feelings even if you can’t directly relate. All of the sounds can take you to a magical place.
Daily News: What do you find most challenging and exciting about your career?
Z: The most challenging aspect about my career at the moment is having such a wild schedule. Sometimes things come up and I have to drop whatever I’m doing and get to work, or miss certain events with family and friends. Although my schedule can be wild, it’s also one of the most exciting things about my career! There have been so many amazing places and so many great people that I have been able to meet because of it. I wouldn’t change it for anything!
Daily News: How do you manage a healthy work/life balance?
Z: My motto is “work hard, play hard!” I get in as much work as I can and whenever I do have free time, I just make sure to relax and appreciate all of my blessings.
Daily News: What do you consider your greatest achievement?
Z: My biggest achievement in my career is the fact that my very first original released song “Nobody’s Better” featuring Fetty Wap was an incredible success! It went viral in countries all over the world and has accumulated over 150 million plays worldwide thanks to my fans!
Daily News: Where do you see yourself in 5?
Z: In 5 years I see myself doing world tours! Putting out at least two or three albums accompanied with music videos. Winning some awards, doing some acting for TV or movies and maybe even have my own company!
Daily News: Do you have any advice for other young professionals?
Z: DON’T GIVE UP! Don’t ever let someone tell you you aren’t good enough. If you work hard enough and have the talent, your dreams are bound to come true! Be smart about your decisions and don’t take your blessings for granted!
Daily News: Where is your favourite place to dine in your city and why?
Z: I absolutely love NYC Pizza and close to Times Square there’s this place off of 38th St. that sells $1 slices which are SO good so I go there a lot.
In my town there’s this really awesome Mexican spot people go to, called Pancho’s. They have great music, food and $3 Margaritasssss so I love going there with some of my friends.
My last favorite place to go to is this Venezuelan restaurant a few towns over in New Jersey called Emma. They are absolutely amazing. The owner moved here from Venezuela and opened the restaurant with his wife. He himself cooks the food and serves to his customers. They have the most amazing gourmet menu for a good price and the atmosphere is great!
Daily News: What’s your most treasured possession?
Z: If a pet counts, then most definitely my sweet baby boy Remmy! He’s my everything! He’s a little teacup Yorkie. I’ve had him since he was 2 months old… He’s now 13 years old and I love him with all my heart!
Daily News: Who’s one person you think everyone should be following on social media?
Z: At the moment I really love how influential Daddy Yankee is on social media. He has a large platform that he uses for good causes. For example with the hurricane that hit Puerto Rico, he showed thousands of people that they could donate to help, but it didn’t stop there. He actually visited Puerto Rico and lent a helping hand. He always shares positive messages aside from that and he makes great music.
Daily News: If you could be in someone else’s shoes for a day, who would it be?
Z: I’d love to see what life would be like as Jennifer Lopez! I’ve always admired her. She’s hard working, a talented actress, singer, dancer and a mom! She has so much on her plate and always looks so graceful and elegant. To experience a day in her shoes would be an amazing experience I’m sure.
Daily News: What’s your favourite city/country to visit and why?
Z: I adore New York City. I’ve had the pleasure of living only about 15 minutes away from it my whole life so I’m fairly familiar with it. It truly is the city that doesn’t sleep! There are endless opportunities and places to visit.
Daily News: What is your greatest fear?
Z: SNAKES! I’ve always been terrified of them and I don’t believe that will ever change!
Daily News: What’s your guiltiest pleasure?
Z: I can eat an entire pint of Häagen-Dazs ice cream in one sitting… I know… Don’t judge me!
Daily News: And lastly, what does success look like to you?
Z: You can be successful in so many ways! Success for me is when you set goals(long term or short term), make a plan and then execute them. Success is determined by each individual person. There’s no one way to be successful. As a whole, you yourself must be content with yourself, your way of living and the circumstances you’re living in.
